Youth Mural Program

At the Mimbres Region Arts Council we firmly believe that the future foundation of our community lies in its young people. We understand the importance of ensuring our future generations have a grounded and well rounded appreciation of how the arts affect our everyday lives.  With that goal in mind, MRAC has embarked on several programs that are dedicated to the youth of Grant County and the surrounding region...

With funding from New Mexico Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts and Local Sponsors, Grant County youth take part in the planning, designing, and production of murals in the region.

Individuals, organizations, or businesses interested in supporting and participating in mural projects are invited to contact MRAC Artistic Director
at 575-538-2505.

One of the latest murals in the Mimbres Region Arts Council Youth Mural Program, “Transportation in the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s” is located at the Hub in downtown Silver City.  A dedication for this mural was held on Sunday, May 16th, 2010.  Pictured from left to right are the Directing Artist, Kate Brown, Cobre High School Art Teacher Sara Pineda, in front Student participant Tracy Lozoya, behind, Project Coordinator, Diana Ingalls Leyba, Building owners Suzi Calhoun and Janey Katz and MRAC Director, Faye McCalmont.

The mural is based on the cars and trucks of the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s, recalling the Chevy dealership (Clifton Motors) formerly located at the Hub and the Shell Station formerly located on the Southwest corner of the complex.

Students from Sarah Pineda’s Cobre High School clay class worked with local professional artist, Kate Brown and Project Intern Krystina Romero, to produce the commemorative mural.  Students researched the local history of the site, aided by Susan Berry, Director, at the Silver City Museum.

The mural is produced of ceramic clay and found auto parts and was commissioned by local business owners Janey Katz and Suzi Calhoun.

Special thanks to project funders Syzygy Tile, Leyba & Ingalls Arts, Prudential Silver City Properties, Chino Federal Credit Union and J & J signs.

Refreshments were generously provided by the following historic downtown restaurants:  Masa y Mas, Alotta Gelato, Peace Meal, Java the Hut and Diane’s
