Youth Mural Program
"Gila Library" -- Gila, New Mexico (Summer 2010)
The Gila Library Mural was created this summer in a two week camp led by artists Cedar Smith and Mary Giardana. The community decided on the Gila River as the theme. Twenty-eight Gila youth participated in the mural project. The children researched appropriate imagery in the library and created hand-glazed ceramic tiles of riparian life. These were placed along a river landscape the students painted on mural cloth and mounted on hardybacker.
The Benwood Foundation sponsored the project.
