The Artist Lecture Series 2011 - 2012 Season Lineup

The Artist Lecture Series (also known as "Evening with the Artist") is presented in partnership with the Western Institute for Lifelong Learning (WILL) and the WNMU Expressive Arts Department.

This program provides an opportunity to get up close and personal with some of America's finest artists. Held at Parotti Hall on the WNMU campus, participants have the opportunity to learn about an artist's motivations, techniques and history while being generally entertained. This season's series offers a broad and varied group of accomplished individuals.

Parotti Hall is located to the north of the Fine Arts Center Theatre. Each lecture will be held on a Thursday and will begin at 6:30 pm (except where noted). Light refreshments will be served. Click for printable map.

Suk Jun Kim
WNMU Professor of Sound

Nostalgia/Nostophobia On the way to Fwarrheu, you were to stop and say: Have I not lingered on this journey too long, is not my body aching and my spirit low. Had not my desire to seek new worlds grown weary of the unfamiliar, ah, my longing to return I can no longer bear. Then you were to remember the Mad Man who had spoken to you with his lips closed: How can you experience place — or rather, how can you experience the experiences of place? By longing, I say, and by suspending doubt, too. Wanting to return thus will haunt you. From Tails in Hasla by Suk-Jun Kim

March 22, 2012:
Katherine Brimberry
Fine Art Printmaker

Katherine uses a collaborative, non-toxic approach to a variety of printmaking methods which includes: Intaglio, Relief and Monotyping. The emphasis on printing in a creative way is a particular focus that Katherine uses to free an artist to create many variations of original prints from a single matrix or plate.

Flatbed, founded in 1989 by Katherine Brimberry and Mark L. Smith, is located in Flatbed World Headquarters, an 18,000 sq. ft. warehouse redeveloped in 1999 as a community of creative professionals. Visitors have compared the aesthetics of the space to New York City's Chelsea-district warehouse galleries.
